We're celebrating 150 years of public education. In 1852, Governor James Douglas established a school for "children of the labouring classes" on Vancouver Island. The Colonial School — which opened in Fort Victoria in March 1852 with 18 pupils — was the first state-supported school in what is now British Columbia. |

And we're looking back 40 years — to the start of colleges, institutes, and new universities. The Macdonald Report (1962) led to the creation of provincial community colleges and institutes, as well as the University of Victoria (1963) and Simon Fraser University (1965). |
